Why do I get “The Look” even from some in my own family when I get garbed for a ride? It wasn’t so bad when it was just a motorcycle helmet, eye wear, leather gloves, and motorcycle boots but once I put on the leather chaps that seemed to be the proverbial straw. I don’t usually wear chaps only when the weather conditions warrant, like in the early spring and early fall. They just make for a more comfortable ride against the cooler seasonal elements. I get the “who or what does he think he is” look. Like I’m tring to be something I’m not. I guess I can understand somewhat because I might have a bit of the same attitude when I see some my nomally mild mannered middle aged plus friends take it even another step with the bandana in lieu of a helmet. Mild mannered business guy by weekday and Son of Anarchy by weekend. Riding my Victory Kingpin is my hobby, passion and theropy. What am I supposed to wear for protection that would get the non-enthusiast approval? Leather motorcycle jackets, vests, half-helmets, gloves, leather chaps and pants and motorcycle boots are the style when it comes to riding an American Cruiser but more than that its safety, comfort and protection. Maybe if it were all white leather or some pastel instead of black. Na, I’d get even more “LOOKS!” Wait until they see my skull mask!!

How does that saying go? “You should spend as much on a helmet as your head is worth!” It goes something like that. I’ve been reading a lot of conflicting information about the certification standards for motorcycle helmets. Is DOT-certification (Department of Transportation) or Snell-Certification (named after William “Pete” Snell Memorial Foundation-SMF) the way to go? What do these emblems on motorsport helmets mean? Leather motorcycle apparel is made predominately from cowhide and on a lesser extent from sheep, deer, and buffloe hides (re: skin). Just like your own skin leather motorcycle jackets and leather pants and chaps need care to remain supple, smooth and attractive. The old saying applies here that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Read the rest of this entry »
Cold weather is fast approaching so depending on where you live and your riding situation you’ll soon be dawning motorcycle gear to adapt to the elements. By situation I mean, do you need to suit up for a long ride at prolonged highway speeds or do you have short commutes at moderate speeds? Do you live in a moderate climate zone or do you ride in somewhat more sever conditions?
Regardless, if you’re looking for new motorcycle riding gear there are a few things you should consider before buying. Read the rest of this entry »
On Oct 3, 2008, Greenville Attorney Suzanne Coe filed a lawsuit to stop the city of Myrtle Beach from enforcing three ordinances that target motorcycle rallies. The lawsuit focuses on the three ordinances that took effect immediately after the city passed them: Read the rest of this entry »
Does anybody know why Motorcycle helmet manufactures recommend replacing helmets every 5- years regardless if they have bounced off the pavement or not? I know that when EPS (Expanded Polystyrene), the protective lining in DOT approved helmets, is impacted that it crushes and does not flex back so it definately should be replaced. Does time also have a degrading effect on EPS? EPS is the material used to make coolers and coffee cups. I am under the impressing that it takes a radioactive particle half-life (or maybe never) for EPS to degrade in a landfill. Will good care and storage of a helmet make it last longer?
Motorcycle Helmets now required in Myrtle Beach city limits. It looks like the city fathers are trying discourage the bi-annual rally.
There are challenges forthecoming to this law because it goes against state law.
