motorcycle riding jackets

Three years ago, my wife and I retired and decided to take a cross-country excursion on my motorcycle. It had been awhile since we had hit the open road, so we had to update our wardrobe a bit. This included purchasing motorcycle riding jackets and new riding gloves.

For two months we traveled all over the US, and it was certainly one of the most rewarding experiences of our lives. I can confidently say that I visited many places I never thought I would—or even knew existed. Now we have decided to make the motorcycle journey a tradition and embark on one every other year.

motor cycle riding gear

As many motorcyclists would attest, a warm August day is tailor-made for riding. But a day or two out on the road is seldom enough to satisfy the true bike enthusiast. One of the best ways to get the most out of the summer season is to attempt a cross-country cycle journey. Road trips are a staple of our cultural lore, and they can be viewed either as a rite of passage or a way to rediscover one’s youth.

Logistical planning is key, of course. Do you have the suitable motor cycle riding gear for the journey? Where will you stay, and what is the cost of fuel? Try to schedule the trip so that you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the landscape - if you can find a way to ride through the mountains and high desert of the American West, you’re sure to have a memorable experience.

helmets motorcycle

The most common outcomes in motorcycle accidents are head injuries, which often cause death. With the rising and alarming statistics that occur every year, a lot of riders still refuse to wear helmets motorcycle and often times even risk the lives of people who ride along with them. Save your life by protecting your head in case of any road accidents.

Good modular motorcycle helmets have outer shells made of layers of fiber glass. They are manufactured by heating fiber glass to coat a mold and form the helmet shape. Once cooled down, the fiber glass outer shell becomes a very hard and durable material that can withstand extreme crash scenarios. The inner cushion is made of high quality foam material that will also help absorb the dynamic crash to protect your head from serious injuries.

ladies motorcycle gloves

In summertime, the living is easy. You can hop on your motorcycle with minimal preparation, only stopping to make sure you have your helmet. Safety remains a priority in any season, of course, but winter brings with it a few additional concerns. Anyone who’s taken a hog out for a spin on the open road knows that the going can be chilly. Wind is an undeniable factor, and it only becomes tougher to bear as the seasons change.

For starters, you’ll thank yourself later for investing in a high-quality pair of ladies motorcycle gloves. Most bikers have a predilection toward leather, and they will be best served to follow it in this case. Leather gloves are effective at combating the elements, and they also allow full manipulation of the digits. You’ll also need to take grip into account - keeping your hand on the throttle is crucial when riding a bike.

Motorcycle travel can be a fun and efficient way to visit distant locations throughout the country. The clear benefit of traveling by motorcycle is gasoline efficiency; some motorcycles can gain upwards of 70 MPG on the highway.  It’s also great to experience the outdoors while you’re traveling. In a car you really don’t get the full experience of travel; the wind blowing in your face, the smells and sounds of the outdoors, and the feel of the road beneath you.

Many motorcyclists who travel will have a motorcycle trailer for camping, and other equipment might include motorcycle riding boots, a GPS navigation device, and extra warm clothes in case of cold or adverse weather conditions.  You will be amazed by the sense of freedom you gain from traveling by motorcycle; it’s truly an experience that everyone must have at least once.

While everyone wants to look stylish on their bike, safety is always the number one priority. Wearing a motorcycle jacket is a great way to protect yourself from road burn in the event of a crash, but during the scorching summer months a leather jacket can be too much. For these hot times, you need an alternative to the traditional jacket that will still keep you safe.

A leather motorcycle vest is a stylish alternative that is still practical on the bike. Many come with embroidered designs to set you apart from the crowd. You can find options with inner and outer pockets, and even models that include armor for extra protection.

Road Trip Must: The Right Helmet

We recently mentioned that it’s important to observe motorcycle helmet laws in different states while you are on an interstate road trip. This can get tricky if you’re, say, riding from helmet-free Illinois to full-helmet Missouri and forget to put on your helmet. Make a list of states you will be in where you need to wear a helmet and keep it with you. There’s no point in ruining your trip by getting a fat traffic ticket!

There are also laws in the states that require helmets about what kinds of helmets are acceptable. In many instances, motorcycle novelty helmets are not considered legal helmets, as they do not meet U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) standards. These legal helmets will have labels on them to indicate that they are DOT-approved, and they usually have an inner lining of one-inch-thick foam. Plus, they don’t flex as easily as many novelty helmets, and are designed to reduce injury in the event of an accident. Be sure to have the right helmet, both for your safety and to avoid a citation.
