A Death-Defying Ride

motorcycle vest

Every year my boyfriend tells me he wants a motorcycle. And every year I tell him no. It’s not because I’m a wimp or a control freak, you have to know about his past to understand why it would be a dangerous purchase for his future. Wilber has always been an audacious guy. A true man’s man in sports and competition, he’s always looking for an adrenaline rush.

When Wilber was 16 he accompanied his father to California to spend a week riding dirt bikes through the trails of the mountains. He had been lagging behind a little on one route and in an effort to catch up to the pack, he accelerated quickly. What he didn’t foresee was that they were approaching a turn, but instead of curving with the side of the mountain, he flew off the side on his bike. A shattered pelvis and an almost-lost eye were his repercussions. Maybe I can talk him into collecting motorcycle vests or Zippo lighters instead.

I was hanging out with one of my really great friends the other day. He needed help organizing his motorcycle gear. He’s an avid rider of anything that has two wheels. He was telling me that he was excited for summer. He had all these plans to go cross country riding with his motorcycle club.

While I was looking through his gear, I found an older vest that had “mens leather vest” embroidered on the back. I asked him what the meant. He informed me that it was his first motorcycle club. The group couldn’t decide on a name, so that was the best that they could come up with. He keeps the jacket in memory of his youth.

When purchasing a new riding vest, the thickness of the material will certainly be a major point to consider. Particularly if you’re purchasing a vest for cool weather riding, thickness is definitely going to come into play. When examining a leather motorcycle vest, you want one that is at least 1.2 mm thick. Anything thinner than 1.2mm will allow too much cold air to flow through, defeating the purpose of wearing a vest at all.

Second, a thicker leather motorcycle vest is going to hold up better in an accident. Thin material will shred apart almost immediately in a fall, whereas a thick vest will be suitable to be worn again. Also, a thicker vest will give you extra padding to protect you during an accident. It won’t necessarily keep you from getting hurt at all, but it will help prevent a lot of scratches and cuts.

Beat the Heat on Your Bike

During the summer months, particularly in the South and Midwest, the prospect of wearing a leather motorcycle jacket is none too appealing. With the sun blazing down and the pavement radiating heat, you hardly need an extra layer of insulation. But as you probably are aware, a leather jacket isn’t worn purely for warmth.

In the event of a crash, the jacket serves as a critical buffer between you and the pavement. So when the mercury starts to rise, nixing the jacket altogether probably isn’t the best M.O. I simply remove the sleeves—figuratively, of course. For the summertime, I keep a couple of motorcycle vests on hand to protect my torso when I fall. And while a vest may not offer the same protection as jacket, it’s certainly better than nothing.

Atypical Mother’s Day Gifts

womens leather vestsMost moms expect flowers or chocolates on Mother’s Day, but my mom is of a different breed. For the last 20 years, she has been an avid Harley Davidson enthusiast, traveling to motorcycle shows around the country in her free time. Whether it’s Christmas or her birthday, motorcycle gear and accessories are the only items ever found on her list.

For this Mother’s Day, she expressed a need for a new motorcycle vest. My siblings and I decided to look online for the best deals on womens leather vests and pool our resources to get a premium model. Fortunately, we were able to find one well under our budget, so we were able to afford a few other peripherals as well.

Cycling South of the Border

Now that the weather is beginning heat up, I have begun preparing for annual rides this summer. Every year I save up all of my vacation time and sick days for a couple of excursions on my motorcycle. This year I am consolidating my typical two to three day sojourns into one grand expedition south of the border to explore Central America.

Usually the motorcycle gear I have is sufficient for the trip, but this year I know that I am going to need to invest in a few essential items. One thing that is noticeably lacking from my wardrobe is a quality motorcycle vest. When I am in the tropical climate of Central America, I know that motorcycle leather vests are going to be a must, as I won’t be able to bear the heat of a full jacket.

Choose a vest for summer

Choose a vest for summer

In the hot summer months, a full leather motorcycle jacket can be too warm. While leather jackets provide the most protection against road rash in the event of a fall, they can simply be too heavy for everyday wear. A good alternative is a leather motorcycle vest. It still gives your chest and back vital protection against road rash, and you can layer it over a T-shirt or a sleeveless shirt to stay really cool while riding.

A leather motorcycle vest always works off the bike, too. It’s common to see men and women wearing motorcycle vests around town, either as a necessity for when they get back on their bikes or as a fashion statement. Like motorcycle jackets, motorcycle vests are open to a host of options for special embroidery and customization. You can choose from patriotic designs, skull and cross bone designs, the designs of your favorite motorcycle company and many more. A leather vest is a must for anyone who rides in the summer.

x740-saddlebag.jpgIt looks to me that industries catering to motorcycle enthusiast will be least hit by todays economic conditions. Being associated with marketing of motorcycle safety gear and apparel, I’ve noticed a marked increase in the sales of riding accessories over the past month especially motorcycle luggage and saddlebags. If you want to experience the adventure of monsoon you surely will not like to wear a formal outfit. Long trousers and full-sleeved shirt is surely not an appropriate dress for monsoon outings on your bike. If you agree, leather motorcycle vest are the best option for you. 3002-marines-z1.jpgOn any given day in any given city, you can walk around and see dozens of people with leather motorcycle vests. They are a quintessentially American garment that has gone far beyond simple motorcycle culture, although within motorcycle culture they are pretty much part of the required uniform. That doesn’t mean that you can’t express some individuality with yours. There are a whole variety of leather motorcycle vests on the market, so let’s take a look at some of the hottest styles this year and see if we can find the perfect one for you.
