womens motorcycle chaps

I would bet my life that my beloved Aunt Joan has never taken a ride on a motorcycle in her life. Still, you’d never know it from looking at her. She spent the first part of her adult life working in retail at a Harley-Davidson store, and naturally she made many friends there. I’ve met enough of her old customers and buddies to recognize that bikers often get a bad rap. Most of them are very nice once you get to know them.

It should come as no surprise that Joan started hanging around in biker circles, occasionally even riding in sidecars with her friends. She has been dressing the part ever since I can remember, and it seems that she buys at least one pair of womens motorcycle chaps online each and every year. Leather is such a versatile material that it can be worn comfortably and confidently in any casual situation.

menwomenmotorcyclejackets.jpgMotorcycle Clothing is as much a part of a ride as your motorcycle. Motorcycle gear has a minefield of clever marketing and hype. Buried somewhere underneath all the marketing hoopla are some excellent products. When buying motorcycle gear where do you start? How do you make informed decisions on what motorcycle gear is best for you?

The basics…

Why do you wear motorcycle clothing in the first place? For most, the answer is obvious; it is purely a safety issue. In Europe, any safety clothing, whatever its use, has to be certified as suited for its intended purpose by a battery of test carried out by laboratories that are accredited to do so. If they pass, they may be sold bearing the CE mark. As a result of testing and the associated research it is clear that well made motorcycle clothing helps lessen the severity of injuries in an ill-fated event of a crash. Don’t Forget Your Chaps!

When it comes to riding motorcycles, your apparel should suit your style; if you don’t like wearing all leather, then don’t!  The reason most motorcyclists wear leather is because it insulates their bodies against wind chill.  This can be achieved through other fabrics, but it’s a good idea to have a sturdy jacket, motorcycle chaps, and of course a helmet whenever you ride.  When you don’t wear motorcycle chaps, it’s common for your legs to get cold, and if you wear heavy pants, you tend to lack a certain mobility and often become uncomfortable when riding.

Motorcycle chaps come in dozens of different of styles, and not all styles are leather fabric.  Create your own unique motorcycle style, and you’ll be much happier when you’re out there riding!

b7541-retro-chaps.jpgLike most motorcycle enthusiasts I’m really getting anxious for the warm sunny days that are bound to eventually get here.  We’ve still got the shoulder season to get through too.  That’s the time of year that it is too cold in the morning but can get too hot in the afternoon.  I know, most people call that spring and fall but none-the-less it is the time of year that poses an apparel dilemma for motorcycle riders.

I admit that I like the freedom of the hot summers because I really don’t like wearing a lot of cycle gear.  Usually I just wear a motorcycle helmet, light leather vented gloves, eye protection and 6” high motorcycle boots; that’s it as far as the protective gear goes. cycle-gear-photo.jpgSince the dawn of the age of motorcycling, it was apparent that something was needed to protect the exposed human body from the elements. The natural solution was leather. The leather motorcycle jacket, a style made popular by such movie icons as James Dean and “the Fonz”, not only serves as a fashion statement, but is an essential piece of equipment to any serious biker for keeping warm, dry, and in one piece. A good “riding grade” leather jacket combined with motorcycle chaps or leather pants, will act as a second skin between you and the road, and can quite literally “save your hide”. With all this in mind, let’s explore the things to consider when purchasing motorcycle leathers. Read the rest of this entry »

rt101-a.jpgChaps are important lower body protection for the body. Just like other things, it has its own history on how it came to evolve on its varieties today. b7540-brown-chaps-2.jpgOnce you have taken all the steps towards learning to ride a motorcycle, there are some things to consider before actually getting on the road.

First, make sure you are familiar with your state’s laws regarding motorcycles. Learner’s permits often have certain restrictions that prohibit carrying a passenger, riding after dark, riding on the freeway, or even whether or not you must wear a helmet. Even with a motorcycle endorsement, you may be considered a novice for a period of time and that may carry its own restrictions. In addition, there may be restrictions regarding the equipment on your motorcycle. There are many aftermarket products, such as brake lights with chasers, that are illegal in some states. Make sure a bike addition is legal before you purchase and install it on your ride. Read the rest of this entry »
