Motorcyclists: Protecting Hands and Feet

We use our hands and our feet to control and maneuver our motorcycles, and when it comes to safety, it’s important to ensure our hands and feet are safe and secure when riding our motorcycles.  Unlike driving a car, driving a motorcycle requires a good deal more precision.  It’s also possible for hands and feet to be struck with debris from the road, and even a quick jerk of the hand or slip of the foot could result in an accident.  It’s important to wear motorcycle gloves and motorcycle boots when riding.  Having sturdy leather gloves and boots will protect our hands and feet against the odd piece of debris on the road, and also help keep warm during colder weather.

In addition to wearing motorcycle gloves and boots, it’s also always a good idea to wear a motorcycle jacket and of course a helmet with a visor.  There are hundreds of different styles when it comes to motorcycle apparel, so don’t feel that just because you’re keeping safe that you can’t look cool!

menwomenmotorcyclejackets.jpgMotorcycle Clothing is as much a part of a ride as your motorcycle. Motorcycle gear has a minefield of clever marketing and hype. Buried somewhere underneath all the marketing hoopla are some excellent products. When buying motorcycle gear where do you start? How do you make informed decisions on what motorcycle gear is best for you?

The basics…

Why do you wear motorcycle clothing in the first place? For most, the answer is obvious; it is purely a safety issue. In Europe, any safety clothing, whatever its use, has to be certified as suited for its intended purpose by a battery of test carried out by laboratories that are accredited to do so. If they pass, they may be sold bearing the CE mark. As a result of testing and the associated research it is clear that well made motorcycle clothing helps lessen the severity of injuries in an ill-fated event of a crash. b7541-retro-chaps.jpgLike most motorcycle enthusiasts I’m really getting anxious for the warm sunny days that are bound to eventually get here.  We’ve still got the shoulder season to get through too.  That’s the time of year that it is too cold in the morning but can get too hot in the afternoon.  I know, most people call that spring and fall but none-the-less it is the time of year that poses an apparel dilemma for motorcycle riders.

I admit that I like the freedom of the hot summers because I really don’t like wearing a lot of cycle gear.  Usually I just wear a motorcycle helmet, light leather vented gloves, eye protection and 6” high motorcycle boots; that’s it as far as the protective gear goes. x740-saddlebag.jpgIt looks to me that industries catering to motorcycle enthusiast will be least hit by todays economic conditions. Being associated with marketing of motorcycle safety gear and apparel, I’ve noticed a marked increase in the sales of riding accessories over the past month especially motorcycle luggage and saddlebags. b7540-brown-chaps-2.jpgOnce you have taken all the steps towards learning to ride a motorcycle, there are some things to consider before actually getting on the road.

First, make sure you are familiar with your state’s laws regarding motorcycles. Learner’s permits often have certain restrictions that prohibit carrying a passenger, riding after dark, riding on the freeway, or even whether or not you must wear a helmet. Even with a motorcycle endorsement, you may be considered a novice for a period of time and that may carry its own restrictions. In addition, there may be restrictions regarding the equipment on your motorcycle. There are many aftermarket products, such as brake lights with chasers, that are illegal in some states. Make sure a bike addition is legal before you purchase and install it on your ride. Read the rest of this entry »

gfcyg.jpgWe all have preferences in choosing the things that we want to buy. It is very important because this is where you will base your satisfaction. Most of the time, what we want in the things that we buy is comfort and reliability. The comfort that you feel comes from your senses. This means when you use the object it appeals to your senses that when it touches your skin, you just love the feel of it. Reliability comes in the sense that for whatever purpose the object may serve, it really delivers what is being promised.

These are the things that we also want when we choose the right gloves to be used in motorcycling. Most of the time, you might not consider the importance of getting into the details of the motorcycle gear that you are about to purchase. However, you should know what makes it great and not. If you were to look for comfort and reliability, then you begin to understand what their features are and what how they work for you. Read the rest of this entry »

Statistics have shown that there is a 17% increase injuries related to riding this vehicle from 2006-2007. In terms of fatalities, there a 6.6% for the same years. This is a clear indication that riding this vehicle poses great risks to riders when they are not protected when riding bikes.
